Michelle Van Raes
Administrative Volunteer

“Volunteering has given me a lifeline of hope while dealing with a life-threatening disease. It has enabled me to focus on helping out in my community by concentrating on what I can do instead of what I can’t. I have been blessed to be surrounded by incredibly supportive family, friends, doctors, and co-workers. The experience has been life changing. It is with their kindness I am learning to find a way forward. I hope my volunteer efforts might create a positive ripple effect and help others as I have been helped.”

Shelagh Glanville
Transit Assistance Program Manager

"In the 2009 Cowichan Valley flood I lost everything! My family photos, my clothes, my furniture … all that remained was a skeleton of my home. The community worked together to donate gift cards and other supplies. I am so grateful to my dear friends, the Provincial Emergency Fund, and everyone who helped me get back on my feet. I feel I owe it to the community to give back. By volunteering at United Way to manage the Transit Assistance Program in Cowichan, I feel I am able, in some small way, to give back to my community in a way that I couldn’t before. It has really opened my eyes to see what a great need there is here in the Cowichan Valley. I wish I could do more."
