Better at Home

We're giving seniors a hand

Better at Home is a United Way program that helps seniors with simple, non-medical day-to-day tasks so that they can continue to live independently in their own homes and remain connected to their communities. The Government of British Columbia funds the program, United Way Central and Northern Vancouver Island manages it, and local non-profit agencies provide the services.

Services might include transportation to appointments, yard work, light housekeeping, grocery shopping, and friendly visiting. Volunteers provide most of these services - thank you to everyone who committed their time and energy to make our communities better places to live.

In March 2014, Better at Home celebrated three years in our communities! Read here how well received this program has been in it's third year.

Better at Home on Vancouver Island

In 2015, over 1,133 seniors received help with yard work, grocery shopping, transportation, housekeeping and friendly visiting. United Way, as part of its mandate to support programs that help seniors to age with dignity, manages the Better at Home program in seven communities on Vancouver Island: Cowichan, Nanaimo, Parksville, Port Alberni, Courtenay, Comox, Campbell River and Port Hardy. Community consultations were held in each community beforehand to determine the needs in that community and to customize the program to match those needs.
