CSCES was incorporated as a non-profit society in the province of British Columbia in Septmeber 1997, for the purpose of establishing a community school.  The hope was that a community school would create a stronger sense of community by creating a public place where people would get together to participate in new programs and services.  A community school could also improve communication between the schools and the community, as well as lend support to the children in the area by involving more adults in the activities at the school.

Ladysmith Family and Friends Society (LaFF) was created by local parents and caregivers in 1995. As a non-profit charitable organization the Society launched its flagship program (a casual "coffee an crayons") in an effort to reduce the isolation many parents feel, provide opportunities for children to socialize at no/low cost and build a sense of community amongst families and children. Since then, the group has met these goals with great success: participants often comment on how they made all their friends through LaFF at the Aggie. Our Resource Program has a history of engendering community and extended-family-like friendships.
