AIDS Vancouver Island is a frontline non-profit agency who provides support, advocacy, education, resources, and harm reduction to those who are living with HIV/AIDS and/or Hepatitis C; as well as their friends, family and also those at risk. We provide awareness to the Comox Valley through public forums, presentations and annual AIDS Day in Comox, and the Walk Away from Homophobia. We represent many people living in poverty and those who are marginalized situations, and advocate for fairness, justice, education and awareness with regard to ALL community members. Group mentoring consist of gender specific groups for boys aged 9-13 and girls aged 13-17. These groups meet weekly to practice positive relationship building skills, explore their community and overcome barriers in a fun, recreation based format. With an eclectic array of healthy adults who volunteer their time and led by a staff facilitator, the adults and children are able to expore interpersonal dynamics, challenge themselves and work toward their full potential in a safe, welcoming environment while forming friendships with a variety of people from many walks of life. Comox Valley Family Services Association is a diverse team which strives to build on individual and family strengths which support growth and healthy lifestyles.
They offer a Healthy Families Program where the program staff offer a supportive learning environment, information, and a connection to available community resources. They also offer a Family Development Program where the goal is to provide Outreach workers to assist children, youth, and families to live in safe, stable and nurturing environments. Comox Valley Transition Society 202-576 England Avenue, Courtenay, BC V9N 2N3 Phone: 250-897-0511 Lilli House 23 Hr Crisis Line: 250-338-1227 Email:cvts@shaw.ca Website: www.cvts.ca The Comox Valley Transition Society (CVTS) has been in existence for 22 years and provides a shelter (Lilli House), a 24 hour crisis line and counseling programs for women who are in, or are leaving, abusive relationships, and for their children. In 2008, 282 women and children stayed in Lilli House and approximately 1000 calls were received on our crisis line. CVTS also provides Detox and Supportive Recovery services for women, a weekly Drop-in lunch and service hub for women who are homeless or are at risk of homelessness, Bridging Employment Program for women, Legal Information for Women, Violence is Preventable school-based program, Girls Group, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Circle, and community education and awareness. Funded Program: Child and Youth Violence Program, $5,000.00
